I had that trepidation when I was working on this. Thinking, we have always been red, and I thought it would really bother me. But once I was done I really liked the work and in the end it did not bother me one bit. I know there is some connection to the color, but really I think that is just us old timers. The name IMO is what is important. I do not feel like we are shedding an identity here. And as we've learned most Colorado folks have never even heard of us. We are in this transition phase to social media and really trying to rebuild the NAXJA CO Chapter brand. I think this revised logo is a great way to help do that.
As the chapter I think it is okay to differentiate ourselves from the mothership just a bit. I really wanted to bring in the colors of our flag and think it would speak to the current demographic. I played around with a lot of variations and what I landed on above I think is the cleanest/best version. Adding in just the C is not much of a change and I think too much red. I am not a fan of the look.

I thought it would be too much red, but still wanted to see it.
Myself, I would experiment with the letter size for Colorado Chapter. I don't have any problem with the lettering spilling out past the black silhouette.
You could also try blue and white bands, like the state flag. If we can distinguish ourselves from XJ Colorado, it just might work.
