Detroit TrueTrac

Does anyone have any experience with the Detroit TrueTrac on our type of Sierra rocks? Or on trails in general.

Ivan

I Jeep, therefore, I am..
I have one in front, and it does what it's supposed to. For me, it's one step above an open diff; and not a full locker to worry about on the street....

I don't do rocks or extreme trails. My XJ is a built up daily driver for me, that allows me to travel mild/rough trails and logging roads, with more confidence. It actually work pretty well in sand. Street manners are nice, with an occasional tire chirp around turns.

All depends on what you expect out of your rig....

If your into dirt and or snow they are good. If you are into crawling in the rocks they are worthless. Stay open or get fully locked.

That's me a few years back on slick rock [hwy 4, alpine lake -> Utica] staircase. Made my way up fine, just run out of space on the flash.

I love them on highway and on snow. They do ok on rocks for me, but I never rode on a full locker.

Just realized my signature went away somehow. I have 96' 4wd, manual, 31", 8.25 + d30, TrueTracks front and rear.

I ran one for years on the rear 8.25 and loved its on and off road manors. The only down side I had was if a wheel off the ground it became open.

If you go to the snow or live where it snow it does excellently.

As skipper said. If you lift a tire it becomes open essentially. That video showed it pretty clearly.

Yeah that video showed it well. Lockers will walk right up that stuff. LDS is better than open but a long way off from being locked

Holy crap, Andrey has returned, nice to see you posting again.

OP, I have nothing to add that hasn't already been said. Pretty good advice, it will be either great or terrible depending on what your intentions are for you rig.

Bottom line is this is a very expensive limited slip. If you want a LS for the rear, track down a used OEM model. Want a LS for the front, check the mod tech forum for the guys who are running the Volvo LS carrier for the D30. Both of these are much cheaper options with the same results as the tru-trac.

Best for on/off road is a selectable.

Full Detroit/lock right/powertrax all are full lockers and will have drawbacks on the street but will be great off-road especially in the rocks.

If you plan on running a full locker in the front, don't worry about your 2wd operation or street driving, it is invisible until put into 4wd.

So, what are you intentions for your rig? Rock crawler and general trail rig I assume?

Well it isnt my daily driver anymore, and I usually drive no longer than an hour to get to trails. Honestly I have no idea what Im going to be doing in the future. I want to be able to hit the rubicon pretty comfortably is what im shooting for here I think.

And thank you everyone for your advice!

None. They are invisible when in 2wd, aside from some ratcheting in very tight turning(uturns and parking lots)

Head up to SierraFest and check out the different setups in action!
this is the best idea. you'll see what a LSD, open, locked front do on the same obstacle. I don't know if anyone has a LSD front on here though.

don't be afraid of a front locker. they do amazing things. You will regret a truetrac more than a locker.

Ice not so much, but how many times a year do you drive in ice anyway - realistically?

The only thing that is preventing me from wanting a locker is money. And ill never be on ice, and if I am its going to be sketchy no matter what. Originally I wanted to get a selectable locker, but from what it sounds like it is ok to just go fully locked all the time for what im doing. What are your opinions on that, and also what are my product options that are dependable.

lunchbox lockers are not only cheaper than a LSD but you also don't have to pay to have the gears set, so the money argument is no good. Also, you can get a grizzly locker for the 30 pretty damn close to the price of a truetrack if you shop around and haggle with vendors.

would you recommend a lunchbox at all (like aussie for instance)?

I would recommend a lokka, lock right or aussie locker in a heartbeat. I ran one for a couple years on 35s. it was fine.
