Jeep took a flatbed ride today.....

It's a 96 XJ, 4.0 and AW4 with only 64K on the clock.

Was running fine, then about a mile from home suddenly
quit and wouldn't restart. I tried the CPS unplug/replug
trick with no success, then called for a tow.

The fuel pump is running, but no spark at the plugs.
It has a recently installed new CPS, and CMP (due to
failure). When the CMP failed, it stuttered for a second
and the CEL came on, but it continued running and
got me home. The code was a P0340 that time.

This time there's no code. The Jeep was running great
and just shut off like the key was turned off. No
warning whatsoever. I plan on testing the coil tomorrow.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Runnin'

Thanks for the replies guys. Ha ha, it actually had
a half tank of gas. That's the first thing to check
though.

While looking at it today, I noticed the CEL lighted
and ran the codes again. Came up with P0340, the
same code as when the CMP failed before. This one only
has 3K miles on it, and has apparently gone bad again.
The first CMP was the original I'm sure, and only had
61K on it. The new one was a 'Standard' brand, and
lasted a whopping 3K miles.

Shouldn't a CMP sensor last longer than these do?
I don't like unreliable vehicles, and am getting
paranoid about driving the XJ...

Where are you? I'll buy a 96 XJ with 64k on it.

It's only going to be as reliable as you make it. That goes for any vehicle.

I know some of us use and love the high-alt CKP that Standard made for the Renix. . .
How's the lateral shaft play in your dizzy? Mine is due for another, but hasn't taken out a CMP yet. As far as coils go, I've had an Accel fail and not let me rev above 2.5Krpm(had to keep gassing it to not die at idle), and I've had an MSD fail halfway around the block(after installing a new timing set :p).

Gradon, looks like you nailed it. The CMP had the
magnet knocked off and the side holders bent over, as
if the pulse ring had contacted it. Funny thing is,
the distributor shaft feels solid with no play. It must
have a big wobble with worn-out bushings to do that
though. Time for a new distributor.

I'll try to post a pic of this mess later.
Thanks for the replies.
