YoYoMa pre-recorded

Due to the cold and wind. They were afraid the weather could cause him to mess up. However the Marine Corps band played in the same cold, windy weather, live with no recording. Apparently they placed more trust in the Marines' ability to withstand cold than in the highly paid professional musicians'...:D

Well, of course.

In fairness I'd expect that a USMC band is conditioned to play in pretty much any sane weather condition. Yo Yo Ma, not so much.

I wouldnt know. I didnt watch it. Had more important things to do.
Neither did I, heard it on the news. I wanted to see it though. Obama or not, it's still the inauguration of a new president.

The Marine Corps band doesn't do that for a living though, they're just regular ol Marines ;)Yoyo Ma gets paid mucho dineiro to do what he does.

Yeah but in fairness he gets paid to do what he does on a very expensive and fragile instrument (check the insurance policies on those!) and generally indoors. They actually played along, just not amplified (I haven't heard if all their instruments stayed in tune though, that and string failure were the biggest reasons they recorded themselves two days prior).

The USMC band plays outdoors mostly and probably doesn't have too many fragile string instruments (nor heavy pianos! ;) ).

At least they didn't insist on playing indoors and just jumbotronning it!

Edit - Nothing against the USMC band, in fact my cousin either was or tried to be a member (joined the USMC because they had the best band, he's a saxophonist...) I just like apples to apples.

In all honesty, I only posted this as a joke. I could care less about if he actually played it that day...

The USMC band also had a recording handy.

Mechanical musical instruments are extremely sensitive to temperature and humidity.

I heard that the marine band was prepared to go with recordings if the temp got below a certain point, because the moisture would freeze in them, but didn't have to. They were a little sour on the fanfares, though. It must have been a PITA to play that stuff without a chance to warm up.

It might make a difference that Yo Yo Ma's regular regular cello is a Stradivarius and worth a million bucks plus, as almost certainly is Perlman's usual fiddle. It was probably wise of them to bring cheaper instruments and play along unamplified (which is what they did), rather than risk either breaking their good instruments or sounding bad on the substitutes.

I'm more amused at Williams's choice of instruments, as well as the overall arrangement, both of which seem oddly reminiscent of Olivier Messaien's "Quartet for the End of Time." I wonder if there's a statement there.
